Richard Williamson’s practice covers a broad range of matters for enterprises operating in a variety of businesses including banking, finance, investment and all aspects of real estate, including real estate investment trusts.

Mr. Williamson handles purchases, sales, and leases of assets, including operating businesses and financial assets, as well as office buildings, shopping centers, and industrial developments.  He works with companies on a myriad of issues including:

  • representation of real estate investment trusts in a variety of acquisitions of both individual and multi-property portfolios, joint ventures, and securitized financings;
  • real estate finance transactions—acquisition, development, construction, and permanent loans, as well as acquisitions and dispositions of developed and underdeveloped real estate, leasing transactions, and development projects;
  • distressed real estate — workouts, loan restructurings, foreclosures, bankruptcy counseling, and litigation;
  • advising closely held businesses, shareholder agreements, stock and asset sales.

Counsel to Capital Automotive REIT, the nation's leading specialty finance company for automotive retail real estate in multiple portfolio acquisitions and sale/leasebacks; financing and securitizations totaling over $5 billion.

Counsel in the buy-out, restructure and financing of 5-star hotel and restaurant.

Served as lead counsel for the sponsor of the Dulles Greenway, the first private toll road in Virginia, as well as representing the U.S. Army in connection with the privatization of housing at Ft. Lewis, Washington and the Hotel Thayer at West Point.

Mr. Williamson has served on the board of directors of a national bank, mortgage company, life insurance company, private school and was an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia Law School from 2001 – 2013.  He has been a partner at Hazel & Thomas (Reed Smith Hazel & Thomas); Shaw Pittman (Pillsbury); Winston and Strawn and Blank Rome.  Currently he is the Senior Managing Director of Artery Capital Group and Of Counsel with Fiske Law Group.
